CGC Jarvis book Updates

October 26, 2018

I am just reviewing Cdr White's military records from the Navy- only 60 pages to go....He was quite decorated from the Navy and it should be an interesting read....phone interviews are continuing - it helps to get personal perspectives of the incident.  Each person brings different stories, some amusing, some that won't be in the book!  Thanks.... Two key crewmembers who responded well to the incident are SN Joel H. Cortez and SA S. C. Deleon (first name not known at this time).  The whereabouts of each would be appreciated....Cdr White was a big man, I have been told about 6'5" and over 250 lbs.  While somewhat intimidating, the one attribute I hear is that he was always firm and fair. I was also told between him and YNC Hal Hess, they did try to get some awards for the crew but obviously were not successful....                                                                                                                          The launch of the CG helo from the ship during the storm could almost be a movie in itself.  Quite an undertaking with huge swells, rain and winds that made launching quite difficult.  Should the ship decide to evacuate the crew, the pilot assured crewmembers he would continue to transport between the ship and the nearby beach until he ran out of fuel.  Another story related how one member was knocked into the water at Dutch Harbor while dockside.  Another crewmember saw what was about to happen and jumped in almost at the same time, reaching the crewmember and practically throwing him into a nearby small boat.
